Summer seems like a long way away, but it will be here before you can blink! Even with some cooler days, your air conditioning system is likely already hard at work keeping your family cool when the afternoon gets warm. But, there is a good chance that it might not be running as well as it could be, which is a really common problem often rectified by a bit of maintenance.
If you haven’t done any sort of preparation work prior to the season, don’t worry. Here are five of our top tips for summer air conditioning maintenance you can do now for better results.
Tip #1: Perform a Maintenance Tune-Up
The first step in maintaining your AC unit is to have a trusted provider perform a regular service tune-up. Many professional contractors come out and do this for a flat fee at the start of the warm weather season, but you can still have it done at any time in the year. During the process, a trained technician inspects and troubleshoots your system for any of the most common problems and ensures your air conditioning system is working as efficiently as possible.
Tip #2: Adjust Your Thermostat for the Season
Next, you’ll want to adjust your thermostat for the season. If it has a timed feature, use it to help lower your utility bills and keep your home comfortable at optimal times throughout the day. Make sure to take into account any schedule changes, such as having the whole family home during the peak of the day or sleeping in later in the mornings. If you’re going on vacation and nobody will be at the house, adjust your temperature settings accordingly.
Tip #3: Take Steps to Improve Air Flow
Of course, no summer air conditioning maintenance list would be completed without mentioning improving the air flow to your unit. Proper air flow means your system doesn’t have to work as hard to cool down your home, which can in turn lead to lower utility bills. Change interior filters at a minimum of once per month. And clean all shrubs, debris, yard clippings, and dust around the exterior unit to help increase overall air flow. This is particularly important as pak leaves and pollen layer our streets and yards. Get ou there and clear those leaves away from you unit and come summer time, you might avoid some challenges.
Tip #4: Improve Overall Inside Air Quality
In addition to checking the air conditioning unit itself, you’ll need to take steps to improve overall inside air quality. Why? The air inside your home goes through your air conditioning system, and taking steps to improve it can mean less work on the mechanical portion of your HVAC unit. For example, an air purifier can help remove dust and pet hair that would otherwise block your filter and reduce airflow. And a dehumidifier can help remove moisture from the air that makes it harder for your air conditioning system to work efficiently. In the end, the less your AC system has to operate to adjust the temperature in your home, the lower your cooling bill overall.
Tip #5: Inspect Your Condensation Lines
Another tip is to thoroughly inspect your condensation lines for any issues. During the cooling process, moisture can back up in this system, which leads to more humidity in your home and other associated problems. It can also freeze over when your system is at peak use, which can make it hard to cool off the whole home and lead to an air conditioning system failure. Since nobody likes having to deal with a hot and humid home on a summer day, this is quite important.
